Complete CAC Setup Instructions
Complete CAC Setup Instructions
Setting up a Common Access Card (CAC) is essential for accessing secure government systems and networks. Below are the steps you need to follow for a complete CAC setup.
Obtain a CAC
The first step is to obtain your CAC. You will need to have official documents that verify your employment and identity. Your organization’s security office or personnel office will issue the CAC.
Install Required Software
Before using your CAC, you need to install certain software on your computer. These include middleware and drivers compatible with your operating system. Here are the specifics for different OS platforms:
Windows
- Install ActivClient software which acts as middleware.
- Download and install the latest CAC drivers from your card manufacturer’s website.
- Ensure your system recognizes the CAC reader device.
macOS
- Install CACKey, a middleware application designed for macOS.
- Download the respective CAC drivers.
- Verify that your CAC reader is supported and correctly connected.
Linux
- Install CoolKey middleware or any other compatible middleware.
- Get the appropriate drivers for your CAC and card reader.
- Configure your system to detect the CAC reader.
Configure Browser and Middleware
After installation, configure your browser and middleware to recognize and authenticate with your CAC.
Mozilla Firefox
- Open Firefox and go to Preferences.
- Navigate to the “Privacy & Security” section.
- Under Certificates, click on View Certificates.
- Select the Authorities tab and click Import.
- Import the DOD Root CA certificates.
- Navigate to “Security Devices” and load the PKCS#11 module for your middleware.
Google Chrome
Google Chrome uses the system’s security settings for managing certificates, so it follows the configurations applied at the OS level.
- Ensure that your OS trusts DOD Root and Intermediate CA certificates.
- Use the same middleware as configured for the OS.
Test Your Setup
Now it’s time to test if everything is working correctly. Insert your CAC into the reader and visit a secure government portal, such as a DOD website.
- If prompted, select your email or identity certificate.
- Enter your PIN when prompted.
- Access the restricted site functionality to verify that login was successful.
Troubleshooting
If you face issues during setup, consider these troubleshooting tips:
- Verify that your card reader is properly connected and recognized by your system.
- Double-check that the latest drivers and middleware are installed.
- Ensure that your certificates are up-to-date and the correct authorities are trusted.
- Clear your browser cache and restart the system if problems persist.
Security Best Practices
When using CACs, adhere to the following security best practices:
- Always remove your CAC from the reader when not in use.
- Do not share your CAC PIN with anyone.
- Regularly update your middleware and drivers to patch any security vulnerabilities.
Renew or Replace CAC
CACs have an expiration date, after which you will need to renew or replace the card. Contact your issuing office to begin the renewal process ahead of time.
Deactivation and Disposal
Once a CAC is no longer valid or needed, it should be properly deactivated and disposed of to prevent unauthorized access. Follow your organization’s guidelines for safe disposal.
